What’s more depressing than the Flyers’ glaring deficiencies
along the blue line? The fact that only one club in the NHL has more money
invested in the position – and that doesn’t even include Chris Pronger’s salary.
Fred Poulin of The Hockey Writers rounded up a list of the most
expensive defensive brigades in hockey, and even with Pronger excluded because
he’s on long-term injured reserve, the Flyers’ have the second-most expensive top
seven in the league. Have a look:
2. Philadelphia Flyers – $23.708 million
Kimmo
Timonen – $6,333,333Braydon
Coburn – $4,500,000
Andrej
Meszaros – $4,000,000
Luke Schenn
– $3,600,000
Nicklas
Grossmann – $3,500,000
Kurtis
Forster – $950,000
Bruno Gervais – $825,000
News
With the exception of Foster, all seven plus Pronger are
signed through at least next season, too, which makes you wonder how much of this
picture is even open to change over the next six months or so. Timonen’s small decrease
in pay for 2013-14 ($333,333K) won’t provide much relief, either.
Is anybody out there going to willingly take on that figure
for Meszaros, even if it is just for one more year? Coburn, Schenn, and
Grossmann are all under contract until 2016, and the latter two have generally
played well this season – is moving any one of them going to be an option?
I know this opinion is in the minority, but I still believe
they should be able to “get by” with this group plus some of their prospects.
There’s no doubt it isn’t working at the moment though, but the real question
is how do the Flyers go about fixing it?
