La Salle sophomore Pookie Powell was named Big 5 Player of the Week for his efforts in the Explorers' pair of wins last week over Saint Louis and Duquesne.

Powell, averaging 13.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists for the season, had 13 points, eight assists and four steals in the win over Saint Louis. He followed it up with 16 points, six boards, five assists and an 8 for 8 night from the free throw line against Duquesne.

The back-to-back wins made La Salle 8-5, 2-1 in the Atlantic 10. A game at Rhode Island Thursday and back home vs. George Washington on Sunday await.

St. Joe's Edwards out for season
Saint Joseph's freshman forward Lorenzo Edwards will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery later this week, the school announced Monday.

Edwards has played in just one game this season, Nov. 14 vs. Columbia, but has dealt with shoulder instability all year.

"We're most concerned right now that Lorenzo can get healthy and then we'll move towards developing his game," Hawks head coach Phil Martelli said in a statement.

"This injury has been ongoing since the summer so we’ve not been able to get an accurate evaluation of his basketball skills. All of us will lend our support during his rehabilitation and we look forward to seeing him back on the court."

St. Joe's has now lost three players to season-ending injuries: leading scorer Shavar Newkirk, sophomore Pierfranceso Oliva and Edwards.
