Penn slowed by Towson in semifinals of Gulf Coast Classic

ESTERO, Fla. -- Mike Morsell scored 18 points and led four players into double figure scoring as Towson edged Penn, 79-71, to advance to the championship game of the Gulf Coast Classic tournament Tuesday night.

The Tigers will face George Southern in the championship game Wednesday night.

The victory was the 100th career win at Towson for coach Pat Skerry, who becomes the third coach in school history with 100 wins.

Towson (4-1) shot 24 of 52 from the field, including 7 of 16 from long range, and converted 24 of 37 attempts from the free throw line. Zane Martin added 13 points and Eddie Keith II contributed 12.

Penn (3-3), led by Ryan Betley's 25 points, shot 28 of 58 (48.3 percent) from the field and knocked down 6 of 18 shots from long range, but managed just 14 free throw attempts. Darnell Foreman had 16 points for the Quakers.

Ryan Betley and Caleb Wood scored 12 points apiece, and Pennsylvania routed cold-shooting Dartmouth 74-46 on Friday night.

Penn (20-7, 10-1 Ivy League) has won three straight, remains atop the league standings and faces Harvard (10-1) on Saturday. Dartmouth (6-18, 2-9) has lost two of its last three games.

Betley made three 3-poiners and Wood was 5 of 9 from the floor. Max Rothschild added 11 points and Darnell Foreman had 11 of Penn's 46 rebounds.

Dartmouth shot 19 of 57 (33 percent) from the field and missed all 18 of its 3-point attempts. Chris Knight scored 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting for the Big Green.

The Quakers closed the first half on a 14-4 run for a 39-19 advantage and cruised from there. Betley scored six points, and Wood and Devon Goodman each made a 3-pointer during the stretch.

ITHACA, N.Y. —  Ryan Betley matched his career high with six three-pointers in scoring 23 points, AJ Brodeur added 21 and Penn remained in first place in the Ivy League with a 79-71 victory over Cornell on Saturday night.

Cornell was within five with a minute to go but 7-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line, including five from Betley, was enough for Penn.

Betley made consecutive 3-pointers and Antonio Woods added another for a 40-33 lead with 15:58 left. Darnell Foreman's 3-pointer gave Penn the game's first double-digit lead with 10:27 remaining and another Betley 3 its largest lead of 13 with five minutes left.

Caleb Wood added three 3s and 13 points for the Quakers (19-7, 9-1), who shot 52 percent and made 11 of 25 from the arc.

Terrance McBride scored 14 points, Jack Gordon and Matt Morgan 12 each and Stone Gettings 11 for the Big Red (10-13, 4-6), who shot 50 percent but just 6 of 21 on 3-pointers. Morgan, the nation's eighth-leading scorer coming in at 23.1 points per game, was 0 for 8 from the arc.
