Just a little over a month before the season begins, Penn State has lost a key special teams piece.
Kickoff specialist Joey Julius is no longer with the Nittany Lions, the program confirmed Monday to PennLive.com's Bob Flounders.
Julius, who was listed by the program at 5-foot-10, 258 pounds, made headlines not only for being a larger-than-normal-sized kicker but also for his public battle with an eating disorder. He had been treated twice for the disorder within the last year.
A graduate of Lower Dauphin High School in the greater Harrisburg area, Julius averaged 62.1 yards per kickoff and recorded 45 touchbacks last season.
Julius, who would have been a redshirt junior this season, had not practiced with the Nittany Lions during the spring.
