Dionte Christmas’ season with the Delaware 87ers has come to an abrupt end. The Philadelphia native and Temple alum suffered a right Achilles tendon rupture on Tuesday playing against the Northern Arizona Suns.

Christmas had been the 87ers’ second-leading scorer with 15.3 points (36.9 percent from three), 3.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 32.3 minutes per game.

“On behalf of the Sevens organization, I sincerely thank Dionte for his tremendous contributions to our team this season,” 87ers general manager Brandon Williams said. “He has been a consummate professional, positive influence on the development of our young roster, and vital to our energy and drive. We will certainly miss his leadership on the court, but are inspired by his confidence as he attacks the next steps on the road to recovery.”

The Sixers signed the 30-year-old Christmas toward the end of training camp, waived him and held on to his D-League rights. He had planned to go overseas to Greece this season and instead decided to play for the Sixers when they reached out.

"Anytime I get a chance to come and represent for Philadelphia and get a chance to play with these guys, play in my city, I’m always going to take that shot," Christmas said after signing with the Sixers. "This is me taking a chance at my dream and trying to stick in the league."

Christmas will undergo surgery at Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists.
