When going through the draft process, it always is helpful for prospects to have NBA players to turn to for advice and support. Michigan State guard Bryn Forbes has one who experienced the same process only four years ago … and has won a championship since then.
Forbes has been able to lean on fellow MSU alum Draymond Green (or “Day Day,” as Forbes calls him), as he navigates his way to June 23.
“He’s one of the most down-to-earth, caring people,” Forbes said following his workout with the Sixers on Wednesday. “You wouldn’t think it sometimes the way he plays and maybe the way he’s portrayed, but he really cares about the guys at State, and everybody he runs into loves him. He’s been a big part.”
Forbes began his collegiate career at Cleveland State and transferred to Michigan State for his final two seasons. He averaged 14.4 points (48.1 percent from the field and three), 2.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game as a senior. Forbes knocked down at least one trey in all but 11 of his collegiate career games.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound shooting guard is projected to go undrafted, and that isn’t discouraging him. After all, the Warriors selected Green with the 35th pick in 2012.
“You never know — that was a big thing — where you’ll go or what will happen. So just attack it,” Forbes said of Green’s advice.
Prior to coming to Philadelphia, Forbes worked out with the Celtics, Timberwolves, Magic, Hawks, Kings, Jazz, Bulls and Lakers. He still has workouts remaining with the Pistons and Spurs.
NBA
Forbes believes he has a versatile game that would fit in the league. When it comes to the Sixers, he could see himself working in with their young roster. He can also play the point guard position.
“I can shoot the ball, that’s a premium in the NBA, so I think that’s a great skill to have right now,” Forbes said. “Also, I think I’ve got some speed and athleticism to play on the defensive end and do other things.”
He showcased his offensive skills in front of the Sixers' staff.
“He did a fantastic job there,” Brandon Williams, Sixers vice president of basketball administration and Delaware 87ers general manager, said. “It’s hard to not be attracted to his elite level of shooting. He came in and didn’t disappoint today.”
If Forbes has questions before the draft next Thursday, he knows he can go to Green. Well, maybe he will wait until the NBA Finals are over.
"He’ll tell you the truth about everything," Forbes said. "I think that’s one of the things I appreciate most about him."
