PITTSBURGH — Caleb Sturgis didn't play on Thursday night after suffering a concussion in warmups.

The veteran kicker was hit by an errant punt during warmups without a helmet on and will now have to clear the NFL's concussion protocol before he can return.

"He took a ball to the head in pregame," head coach Doug Pederson said. "He didn’t have a helmet on. He’s under evaluation right now. We’ll see more over the weekend."

Cody Parkey was the only kicker active for the preseason game against the Steelers. He made his only field goal attempt and both extra points.

Sturgis, 27, has clearly been ahead of Parkey, 24, during training camp and preseason. But now, Parkey had at least one game to himself as Sturgis recovers.

Parkey ended up on the injured reserve in 2014 with a groin injury. The Eagles signed Sturgis to replace him, and after a rough start, the veteran had a good finish to the year.
