Eagles sign CB Dexter McDougle to 1-year contract extension

The Eagles on Saturday signed Dexter McDougle to a one-year contract extension after acquiring the cornerback six days ago.

McDougle came over to the Eagles from the New York Jets for safety Terrence Brooks. A former third-round pick out of Maryland in 2014, McDougle has been plagued by injuries throughout his young career. The 26-year-old has played just 20 games in his NFL career.

It's pretty clear the Eagles see McDougle as a slot corner in their nickel package.

"For Dex, he's got a skillset to play the nickel corner position," Eagles VP on football relations Howie Roseman said. "We saw that in his Jet tape. Obviously, a little leap of faith because he only played in that one preseason game. But we're looking for guys who can have defined roles and we feel like he can do that. That's why we made the trade. ... We've had, in the past, on our good teams, we've had guys dedicated to play that nickel position. P Rob has done a good job since he's moved in there but we think Dex has the skillset to do it as well."

The Eagles opted to hang on to McDougle and let go of second-year corner C.J. Smith, who looked to have a roster spot locked up earlier in camp.

Smith was part of the final cuts Saturday that knocked the roster down to 53 (see full roster).
