NFL Notes: Redskins fire Scot McCloughan; Brock Osweiler dealt to Browns

WASHINGTON – The Washington Redskins fired general manager Scot McCloughan on Thursday, the opening day of NFL free agency.

Team president Bruce Allen announced the firing, which is effective immediately.

McCloughan, 46, served as GM for the past two years and had a four-year contract. The day McCloughan was hired, Allen said the new GM would have full control over personnel decisions, but there were splits in the front office on a number of issues.

"The organization remains confident in our personnel department as we execute our free agency plans as well as prepare for the upcoming NFL draft," Allen said in the statement, adding that the team will have no further comment on McCloughan's departure (see full story).

Browns: Osweiler, 2nd-round pick acquired from Texans
CLEVELAND – The Browns found a "franchise quarterback," just maybe not their own.

And whoever winds up behind center in Cleveland will be well protected.

With an eye on making another move at quarterback, Cleveland acquired veteran Brock Osweiler and a 2018 second-round pick on Thursday in a stunning trade with the Houston Texans, who were looking for a partner to help them get rid of the QB's $16 million guaranteed contract.

At first, the unusual trade was met with the usual, Browns-being-Browns skepticism (see full story).

Dolphins: Jones signs $60 million extension
MIAMI -- Miami Dolphins safety Reshad Jones signed a $60 million, five-year contract extension Thursday, watched the team's flurry of moves at the start of free agency and said he's glad to be staying around.

"I think our ceiling is very high," Jones said. "We're building something special here."

The Dolphins made other moves to keep their core, placing tenders on linebacker Kiko Alonso and safety Michael Thomas. They finalized two trades, including the acquisition of tight end Julius Thomas from Jacksonville, and re-acquired Anthony Fasano as a backup tight end.

Thomas was obtained for a seventh-round draft pick this year, and the Dolphins sent left tackle Branden Albert to Jacksonville for a seventh-rounder in 2018. Terms of the trades were agreed to last month (see full story).

Raiders: Aldon Smith detained after car crash
SAN FRANCISCO – Authorities say suspended Oakland Raiders player Aldon Smith was detained in San Francisco after an SUV he was riding in crashed into an undercover police car, injuring two officers.

Bay Area news station KTVU reports that the officers were taken to a hospital Thursday for injuries that weren't life-threatening.

Police say Smith was detained for public intoxication. Officer Robert Rueca said he wasn't arrested.

The woman driving the SUV was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

Smith has played less than 20 games in the last three seasons. The NFL had been expected to review his status this month after he received a one-year suspension for violating the league's rules on substance abuse.

Smith's agent didn't immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy had no comment Thursday.
