BOX SCORE

DETROIT — The Motor City blues lifted Sunday night for Michal Neuvirth and the Flyers.

The goalie made 26 saves during regulation, three more in overtime and stopped two more shots during a shootout. Jakub Voracek secured the Flyers a 2-1 victory with one of the team's two goals in the skills competition.

All-Star Claude Giroux scored his 13th goal of the season and added one during the shootout to help the Flyers win at Joe Louis Arena for just the third time since the 1989-90 season. The Flyers also extended their streak of games with at least a point to six.

The win came a night after a tough shootout loss to the New York Rangers snapped a four-game winning streak, prompting Wayne Simmonds to say, "Shootouts suck."

The Flyers are now 32-66 lifetime in the shootout.

In regulation, Voracek broke away at center ice late during the third and found Claude Giroux near the net. He finished the play with a slap shot to tie the game three minutes into the final period.

Early exit
Forward Ryan White’s night lasted less than three minutes because of a game misconduct penalty for hitting Detroit’s Tomas Jurco in the head. NBCSN replays showed White lowering his shoulder before making contact with Jurco just after Neuvirth stopped his shot at the 2:20 mark.

The Flyers killed the five-minute penalty with plenty of help from the goalie, who turned away all five shots he faced.

White is automatically suspended until the NHL reviews the hit. Colorado’s Gabriel Landeskog drew a two-game suspension in November after hitting Boston’s Brad Marchand in the head.

Bad bounce
Detroit got the game’s first goal late in the second after Nicklas Kronwall’s shot struck Radko Gudas’ glove and dribbled past Neuvirth. Flyers coach Dave Hakstol challenged the call, claiming Darren Helm interfered with the goalie, but replays upheld the initial call and Kronwall got credit for his third goal of the season.

Fighting words
Evgeny Medvedev and Detroit’s Justin Abdelkader had to be separated after tussling near the Flyers' goal midway thorough the second, just seconds after Neuvirth stopped a shot to end the Red Wings’ second power play. Both men drew minor roughing penalties.

Goalie report
Neuvirth (10-5-2) made his first start since Jan. 5 and gave the Flyers a great chance to win.

His biggest save came late in the third after Detroit’s Tomas Tatar broke away after a turnover. Neuvirth made a quick pad save to keep the score knotted at 1-1.

Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek (16-8-4) made 30 saves in the loss.

Power play
The Flyers had four power plays Sunday night and almost cashed in on their final chance. Shayne Gostisbehere appeared to score the game-winning goal with 1.5 seconds to play but the marker was disallowed, and following review, confirmed as replays showed Wayne Simmonds interfered with Mrazek.

The Flyers had two shots during a first-period chance and two more during a power play in the third.

They had a two-man advantage for 1:36 late in the third and logged five shots but came up empty after Mrazek made a nice glove save on Voracek’s slap shot.

Penalty kill
The Red Wings’ power play ranks right in the middle among NHL teams and the Flyers made sure they won’t rise Sunday night. After killing the major penalty in the first, the Flyers were shorthanded twice more but kept Detroit scoreless.

Scratches
Forward Jordan Weal was a healthy scratch for a fifth straight game. Defenseman Brandon Manning, who also has a clean bill of health, missed his second consecutive outing.

Up next
The Flyers return to the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday to face Toronto. It’s the first of the teams’ three-game season series.
