BOX SCORE

The Flyers had to play comeback hockey on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center and while they came back late to tie, they fell short with a 4-3 shootout loss to the New York Islanders.

That’s two losses in a row after coming home with a four-game win streak.

Kyle Okposo scored the game-winner.

The Isles chased starter Steve Mason in the second period after three goals. Still, the Flyers fought back from a 3-1 deficit as Ryan White scored off a nifty pass from R.J. Umberger shortly after Mason’s departure just 1:14 into the second period.

Wayne Simmonds thought he had tied it on a power-play goal, but it was overturned on review for a “distinct kicking motion.” However, Claude Giroux’s 10th goal early in the third finally made it 3-3.

That goal took Mason off the hook. Neuvirth had a strong game in relief with 16 saves.

This was the Flyers' 12th overtime game. They are 6-6.

Notable goals
That would be Pierre-Edouard Bellemare’s shorthanded goal to tie the game at 1-1 in the first period. First, he swatted a puck away from Mikhail Grabovski to begin a two-on-none give-and-go with Giroux. It ended with Giroux’s return pass at the net that Bellemare roofed on goalie Jaroslav Halak.

Chances
Bellemare had two glorious chances for a second goal late in the third period. He failed to lift a rebound on one, then shot into the netting behind the goal on the other.

No goal
Simmonds thought he had tied the game at 3-3 at 13:53 of the second period. Jakub Voracek’s shot from the right circle bounced hard off Halak and Simmonds was both trying to settle the puck with his foot and shoot while being pushed from behind. Thing is, he kicked it and never got his stick on it.

Goalie report
Mason was poor again. Three goals against on 10 shots, two from long range. Nielsen scored twice against him on just three shots.

Power play
Simmonds had two excellent scoring chances on the Flyers' first attempt late in the opening period. The Flyers were 0 for 2, while the Isles were 1 for 1.

Penalty kill
After 24 successful kills in a row, the Flyers have given up three power-plays goals in three games. On the same penalty kill that produced Bellemare’s shorthanded goal, Brock Nelson redirected Nick Leddy’s one-timer to regain the lead for the Isles, 2-1, midway into the first period.

Scratches
Forwards Vinny Lecavalier (back stiffness) and Sam Gagner (concussion); defensemen Radko Gudas (third of three-game suspension), Mark Streit (pubic-plate displacement surgery) and Luke Schenn (left foot/ankle).

Up next
The Flyers will practice on Wednesday at Skate Zone and then leave for St. Louis for back-to-back games. They’ll meet the Blues on Thursday and travel after the game to Dallas where they play the Stars on Friday.
