BOX SCORE

OTTAWA, Ontario — Well there’s one thing the Flyers can’t be accused of in the past two games, and that’s inconsistency.

Too bad their consistency isn’t producing any results, as they were shut out for the second straight game, this time, 4-0, by the Ottawa Senators.

They were shut out at home, 1-0, Thursday by the San Jose Sharks, but one thing they had in common in both blankings, aside from keeping goal judges inactive, is the opportunities.

Against San Jose, the Flyers had 34 shots on goal. Saturday against Ottawa, they got the shot total up again with 36 shots on Craig Anderson.

At the end of the day though, they just can’t seem to get anything past the goalie they are shooting at lately, and that results in climbing numbers in the loss column.

Piling up the PIMs
Sam Gagner more than quintupled his penalty minutes Saturday, and he did it in one play. After Senators forward Alex Chiasson took out Scott Laughton with a clean yet awkward hit, Gagner came to the defense of his fallen teammate amassing 17 minutes in penalties that included instigating, fighting and misconduct. He had just four penalty minutes up to that point.

Laughton left the game and did not return with an upper-body injury.

Notable saves
Steve Mason did the splits big time late in the first period to make a save off Curtis Lazar after a point shot careened off the end boards and out the other side. For his effort, Mason got a stick shoved between his legs looking for a loose puck as Lazar tried to make him a popsicle.

Notable goals
It was a simple tip in front off a point shot, but it was a very notable goal for Mika Zibanejad. Not only did it give the Senators a 1-0 lead in the final minute of the first period, but it also snapped a 12-game goalless drought for Zibanejad.

Goalie report
Mason made some big saves Saturday, just not enough of them as he allowed four goals on 31 shots. His counterpart Anderson, however, was in a zone stopping all 36 shots he faced for his second consecutive shutout.

Shooting gallery
The Senators have allowed the most shots on goal this season, averaging just over 34 per game while the Flyers are second on that list with an average of just over 33 shots per game. That stat was evident Saturday, as the Flyers outshot the Senators, 36-31.

Power play
The Flyers had six shots on goal and several others directed at the goal during two first-period power plays. They went 0 for 2 however, and 0 for 4 on the game with 10 shots.

Penalty kill
While they enjoyed no success on their power play, the Flyers didn’t allow the Senators any on theirs either, shutting the door on them in all three opportunities while allowing just one shot, although the Senators did score one of their goals one second after a power play had expired.

Milestone
Nick Schultz played his 100th game as a Flyer Saturday, while Luke Schenn played his 200th game for the Flyers.

Scratches
Center Vinny Lecavalier and defenseman Evgeny Medvedev. Both are healthy.

Up next
The Flyers head home following Saturday’s game with the Senators and begin preparations to host the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night at Wells Fargo Center.
