BOX SCORE

The Phillies blew a two-run lead in the top of the eighth inning in losing, 5-4, to the Miami Marlins at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday afternoon.

The loss prevented the Phillies from earning a series sweep.

Reliever Hector Neris allowed a two-run, game-tying homer in the eighth. The Phillies’ defense then fell apart as the Marlins rallied for an unearned run to take the lead.

The Phillies are 67-83 with 12 games to play.

Starting pitching report
Alec Asher pitched scoreless ball for the first four innings before allowing four base runners and two runs in the fifth inning. He only got one out in the frame before manager Pete Mackanin went to the bullpen.

Asher has made three starts with the big club this season and given up just four runs in 16⅔ innings.

Miami’s Andrew Cashner allowed five hits, including a homer, and three runs over four innings of work. He walked three and struck out four.

The Marlins picked up Cashner from San Diego at the trade deadline. The right-hander has not pitched well. His ERA in 10 games is 6.18 ERA.

Bullpen report
Joely Rodriguez and Michael Mariot pitched scoreless ball to get a lead to Neris in the eighth.

Neris allowed three runs in giving up a two-run lead. He allowed a walk and a two-run homer to Christian Yelich as the Marlins tied the game. The Phillies’ defense then fell apart. Second baseman Cesar Hernandez was charged with a two-base error when he got in first baseman Tommy Joseph’s way as Joseph was about to catch a pop up by Marcell Ozuna. Ozuna moved up on a ground out and scored on an infield hit by J.T. Realmuto. Realmuto hit a bounder behind the third base bag and Maikel Franco threw wildly to first. The play was initially scored an error but changed to a hit.

Neris is second in the National League at 74 appearances. He might be running out of gas. He allowed just one run in his first in 21 appearances after the All-Star break. Since then, he has allowed runs in four of seven appearances this month.

Mike Dunn got the win in relief for Miami. A.J. Ramos got the save for Miami.

At the plate
Odubel Herrera and Freddy Galvis both homered for the Phillies. Galvis’ homer was his 20th of the season. The most homers he’d previously hit was seven last season.

The Phillies have had four infielders reach 20 homers for the first time in franchise history. Maikel Franco, Tommy Joseph and Ryan Howard are the others.

Herrera had a pair of hits. He is 12 for 24 on the homestand.

Yelich’s game-tying homer was his 19th.

In the field
The Phillies made two errors. Galvis made one, snapping a string of 50 straight starts without an error.

Health check
Howard missed his second straight game with swelling in his left knee. It was not clear when he would play again.
