Phillies spent just under 1,000 days on DL in '13

Where would you guess the Phillies ranked in 2013 on a list of the most player days spent on the disabled list? Top three? Top five? Top 10?

They weren't even in the top half of the league, according to information expertly compiled by Jeff Zimmerman of Fangraphs.

The Phils had 17 DL stints, which was 11th-most in the league. But that resulted in 970 days on the DL, which was 16th in MLB. The Marlins and Braves (1,460 days) topped the list.

It may have seemed like more based on the particular Phillies who were hurt. Six projected opening day starters -- Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Carlos Ruiz, Ben Revere, Domonic Brown and Delmon Young -- combined to miss 265 days. A key starter, Roy Halladay, missed 111 days and the high-priced setup man Mike Adams missed 116. Those DL stints alone account for more than 50 percent of the Phillies' missed days.

The Nationals, meanwhile, were among the luckiest teams in baseball in avoiding injuries. Their players missed just over 600 days on the DL, the fewest in the National League.

But your memory isn't deceiving you -- the Phillies are toward the top in DL days dating back to 2010. From 2010-13, they averaged about 990 days on the DL per year, which was the ninth-highest in baseball and fifth in the NL.

Here is the Phillies' complete list of injured players from 2013:
