Rhys Hoskins returns, will join Odubel Herrera and Nick Williams in getting regular work

NEW YORK — Rhys Hoskins is back in the lineup.

Odubel Herrera and Aaron Altherr are back on the active roster.

Hoskins, plunked on the right hand/wrist by a pitch Saturday night, was cleared to play Monday afternoon against the Mets. He was back in the cleanup hole and in left field for the opener of the three-game series at Citi Field.

The Phillies entered the day with 26 games remaining in the season. Expect to see Hoskins just about every day either in left field or at first base.

"I would like to do that," manager Pete Mackanin said.

Herrera and Altherr were both activated from the disabled list. They had both been recovering from hamstring strains. Monday was a scheduled off day in their respective rehabilitation programs. Herrera is expected back in the lineup in center field Tuesday night. He will play most every day until the end of the season, Mackanin said.

Altherr is still not quite ready to play.

"I think it's close," he said. "I still have to do another base running test."

Because of lingering tightness in his hamstring, Altherr was unable to play over the weekend for Lehigh Valley. He has not seen live pitching in a month so Mackanin will have to ease Altherr back into action once he's ready. When Altherr returns, Mackanin will have to juggle playing time in his outfield because, in addition to Hoskins and Herrera, he wants to get rookie Nick Williams regular reps, as well.

"Starting (Tuesday), Herrera is going to be playing center field, hopefully every day for the rest of the season," Mackanin said. "So that leaves the corners. And Williams has done outstanding. And Hoskins is going to play as much as I can. And (first baseman) Tommy Joseph is still leading our team in home runs and RBIs, so I don't want to just pass him by. So that's going to be the biggest issue.”
