According to a report from FOX Soccer on Wednesday, the Union are set to sell leading scorer and MLS All-Star Sebastien Le Toux to English Premier League team Bolton, in exchange for cash considerations.
The Union declined comment through a team official on Wednesday.
The move would send shockwaves through the Union community as the 28-year-old Frenchman, an expansion original, was the teams primary offensive producer, MLS MVP candidate and face of the franchise for the past two seasons.
However controversial, the roster decision would make sense for the Union in terms of numbers. With Le Toux out of the picture and an estimated salary of 122,000 freed up, the Union could take a step toward roster compliance.
Also, the offensive reigns would be handed to 2010 first overall selection Danny Mwanga, who festered behind Le Toux last season and was recently rumored to be on the market himself.
Moving Le Toux would also release a roster log-jam, as the Union acquired forward Josue Martinez this off-season and drafted 21-year-old Chandler Hoffman with their first-round pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. The two additions, along with Jack McInerney, give the Union a crowded front.
Le Toux scored has 25 goals and has 20 assists in 62 games played with the Union.
Roster turnover
Just days after acquiring Thomas Brandt, Antoine Hoppenot, Krystian Witkowski and Brandon Zimmerman in the 2012 MLS Supplementary Draft, the Union cleaned house.
The team declined the options on defender Joe Tait, La Salle University product and 2011 Supplemental fifth-round pick Ryan Richter, 2011 MLS SuperDraft 41st-overall pick Levi Houapeu and Morgan Langley out of Swarthmore College.
Only allowed eight allotted international roster spots, the housecleaning freed up two for the Union with the loss of Houapeu and Tait, giving them nine.
