J.P. Crawford is the latest Phillie headed to the disabled list.
The rookie shortstop left Saturday night’s game in the fifth inning after suffering a strained right forearm while making a throw.
The Phillies called up infielder Jesmuel Valentin from Triple A Lehigh Valley to replace Crawford on the active roster.
Crawford made a relay throw to third base in the fifth inning.
“My arm went numb after that,” he said. “I just lost feeling. No ligament or any damage like that. So that’s good news. Hopefully just take it day by day and see how it feels (Sunday).”
Crawford said the affected area was close to his elbow. He also revealed that he’d been playing with some soreness in the area, which might explain some of his recent poor throws. He has five throwing errors.

Pedro Florimon replaced Crawford in Saturday night’s game, a 4-1 loss to Atlanta (see first take). With Crawford on the DL, the Phillies could use Scott Kingery more regularly at shortstop, along with Valentin. Kingery got the start at shortstop in Sunday's series finale.
Crawford was holding out hope he would not have to go on the DL.
"Hopefully not,” he said. “But that’s not my decision."
Earlier in the week, the Phillies put pitcher Ben Lively on the disabled list. He joined fellow pitchers Pat Neshek, Mark Leiter and Jerad Eickhoff on the DL.
