Cold shooting can't keep Hawks from soaring

Taylor Funk scored six of his 19 points in overtime and Saint Joseph's beat VCU 87-81 on Wednesday night to end a two-game skid.

Funk hit three straight free throws and the Hawks led 84-78 on his 3-pointer with 2:09 left in OT. The Rams missed six 3s and a jumper over the next three minutes while James Demery and Pierfrancesco Oliva combined for four more Saint Joseph's points.

VCU's Jonathan Williams' layup tied it at 76 with 10 seconds left in regulation.

The Rams shot 45.5 percent from the floor to the Hawks' 37.7 percent, but Saint Joseph's made 29 free throws to the Rams' five.

Oliva scored 15 points, Nick Robinson and Demery scored 13 each with eight rebounds apiece, and Shavar Newkirk added 12 points for the Hawks (6-7, 1-1 Atlantic 10 Conference).

Justin Tillman scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for VCU (9-6, 1-1), which saw its four-game win streak end. De'Riante Jenkins scored 16 points with five assists and Issac Vann scored 13.

Shavar Newkirk stars in St. Joe's win over Duquesne

Shavar Newkirk had 26 points and a career-high ten assists and Saint Joseph's rolled in an 82-75 victory over Duquesne on Saturday night for its third-straight win.

Newkirk was 7 of 15 from the field, made 10 of 11 free throws and collected his third double-double. Nick Robinson had season highs with 16 points and 11 rebounds for Saint Joseph's (12-14, 7-7 Atlantic 10 Conference).

Rene Castro-Caneddy scored 21 points to lead Duquesne (15-12, 6-8), which has lost six of its last seven. Eric Williams Jr. added 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Robinson's 3-pointer gave the Hawks a double-digit lead with 11:44 remaining in the first half, but Duquesne closed the half on a 10-4 surge to pull to 36-31. The Dukes stayed within single digits before Saint Joseph's pulled away with a 12-3 surge and had a 13-point lead with 2:45 left.

NEW YORK -- James Demery and Shavar Newkirk combined to score 39 points to help power Saint Joseph's to a second straight win, 71-55 over Fordham in an Atlantic 10 contest on Wednesday night.

The Hawks ended their five-game losing streak Saturday and completed a season sweep of Fordham.

St. Joe's limited the Rams to just 19 points in the first half and took an 18-point advantage into intermission.

Demery finished with 20 points and grabbed six rebounds and Newkirk scored 19, grabbed six boards and dished seven assists. Pierfrancesco Oliva and Chris Clover each added 10 points. The Hawks (11-14, 6-7) shot 48.2 percent from the field and collected 18 assists on 27 made baskets.

Fordham (9-16, 4-9) finished shooting 43.1 percent from the field (22 of 51). Cavit Havsa finished with 12 points and dished eight assists for the Rams. David Pekarek and Ivan Raut added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
