Freshman Taylor Funk stars in St. Joe's win over Princeton

Freshman Taylor Funk hit five 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 23 points to lead Saint Joseph's to a 71-58 win over Princeton on Saturday night.

Funk made 7 of 8 from the field and hit 4 of 4 from the free throw line. James Demery had 13 points, Shavar Newkirk scored 11 and Anthony Longpre' added 10 points for Saint Joe's (2-1).

Funk made back-to-back 3-pointers and had 10 points during a 14-2 run that gave the Hawks a 59-50 lead with six minutes to go. Mike LeBlanc hit a 3 to pull Princeton within seven points with 3:37 left, but Funk answered with a 3-pointer and Saint Joe's led by double figures the rest of the way.

Devin Cannady led Princeton (0-3) with 22 points, including six 3-pointers. Amir Bell added 15 points and Myles Stephens had 13 with eight rebounds.

Funk has back-to-back 20-plus point games and has 61 points through his first three games, the second most in school history behind Bernard Blunt's 67 points in the 1990-91 season.

The Tigers led for all but 90 seconds in the first half, but hit just 3-of-15 second-half 3-pointers.

James Demery scored 19 points with 10 rebounds, Shavar Newkirk also had 19 points and Saint Joseph's turned back Maine 72-59 on Sunday in the first meeting between the schools.

The Owls (5-5) scored 18 points off 17 Maine turnovers and only gave the ball away three times, their fewest of the season.

Isaiah White had five 3-pointers and 21 points for Maine (3-9). Aaron Calixte added 14 points, Ilker Er had 13 and Andrew Fleming grabbed 11 boards.

Saint Joseph's quickly stretched a 30-27 halftime lead to 12 points as Newkirk and Pierfrancesco Oliva knocked down 3-pointers. The Black Bears were never able to mount a run and failed to get to the foul line, going 2 for 2 for the game.

Temple ended a two-game losing streak after falling to Big Five rivals Villanova and Temple.

James Demery scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Saint Joseph's beat Bucknell 83-70 on Wednesday night.

Demery was 8 of 18 from the field for the Hawks (4-3). Shavar Newkirk added 19 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and Chris Clover had 17 points while Pierfrancesco Oliva grabbed 10 rebounds. The team averaged 41 percent shooting from the field compared to 34 percent for Bucknell.

The Hawks took an early lead and a Robinson layup gave them a 27-16 advantage with 7:06 left in the first half. They were up 40-27 at the break.

Saint Joseph's led by double figures throughout the second half and Taylor Funk sank a layup and a 3-pointer back-to-back to stretch it to 60-39 with 11:23 to play.

Nana Foulland scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds for the Bison (3-5). Zach Thomas added 15 points and led the team with a career-best 19 rebounds.
