St. Joe's closes strong to beat UMass

Taylor Funk scored 22 points and Saint Joseph's closed fast to post an 85-73 win over Massachusetts in an Atlantic 10 showdown Saturday afternoon.

C.J. Anderson got the Minutemen even at 61-61 on a 3-pointer with 10:54 remaining, but Funk answered with a 3 and a layup to park a 24-12 finish by the Hawks.

Saint Joe's bounced back from a 91-62 loss to Davidson Tuesday night and earned a split in the season series with UMass, which won at Amherst, 72-69.

James Demery and Chris Clover each scored 18 points for Saint Joseph's (10-14, 5-7), which hit 10 of 27 from beyond the three-point arc.

Luwane Pipkins and Carl Pierre each scored 21 points to lead UMass (11-14, 4-8).

Saint Joe's was 15 of 20 from the free-throw line; UMass was 3 of 4. The Hawks held a 40-31 advantage on the boards.
