SI: On Jayson Werth and Clint Eastwood

Share

Jayson Werth was profiled -- well, as much as Jayson Werth would allow himself to be profiled -- in an upcoming issue of Sports Illustrated in which readers get to see a slightly more intimate view of the Phillies right fielder than we're typically used to seeing.

My favorite anecdote from the piece:

One of the first things Werth did at training camp in 2007 was to hand
Manuel a DVD of his '04 highlights. Manuel found the footage as riveting
as his favorite Clint Eastwood films, Pale Rider and The Outlaw Josey Wales.
"Jayson and Clint are both intense and have dry senses of humor," he
says. "The difference is that one's a hitter and one's a gunman."

Both dangerous in their own right. (And look at that photo of Clint above, Werth could totally get away with playing that role.)

The SI piece paints a picture of a guy who doesn't really want to be in the spotlight, who doesn't really like talking about himself, or even others talking about him for that matter. But when you keep smashing doubles at such a tremendous clip, people are going to want to know about you.

As we wrote during Jayson Werth Backlash Week, "Playing well and winning turns down the volume on your critics."

That certainly seems to be the case as of late.
