Former Penn State assistant Bob Shoop claims he was fired in countersuit

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Former Penn State defensive coordinator Bob Shoop has responded to the school's lawsuit against him by saying he was forced out and that he encountered "intolerable" working conditions.

In a counterclaim filed Thursday, Shoop's lawyers say that Shoop "was constructively discharged/terminated from, or forced or compelled to leave" Penn State on or about Jan. 10, 2016. They also say he "experienced a hostile, negative work environment."

Shoop wants Penn State to pay him over $75,000 plus because he believes the school fired him without cause.

Penn State is seeking nearly $900,000 from Shoop. The school's lawyers say Shoop was required to pay the university half his base salary for the remaining term of his contract if he decided to leave early.

Shoop has been Tennessee's defensive coordinator since 2016.

Penn State suing former assistant football coach Bob Shoop for nearly $900K

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State University is suing former assistant football coach Bob Shoop for breach of contract, alleging he owes the university nearly $900,000.

According to the lawsuit filed in June, Shoop was required by contract to pay the university half his base salary for any remaining term if he decided to leave early. He was contracted through February 2018, but Shoop resigned in January 2016 to become defensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee.

Penn State is seeking $891,000 with additional interest and court costs.

In a statement released Tuesday, the university says it is suing Shoop to recover a "mutually agreed upon amount."

Court documents show Shoop has signed a three-year contract with Tennessee for $1.125 million a year.

Shoop has declined to comment.
