More than 3,000 rowers are hitting the water for the 73rd Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.

Crew teams from more than 100 colleges and universities are on the water for preliminary heats on Friday. The finals are set for Saturday.

The Schuylkill River is also hosting the Philadelphia Challenge Cup, a single scull competition among eight Olympians.

Last year, Brock University became the first Canadian school to capture the men's heavyweight eight championship and Cal-Sacramento took the women's varsity eight. Saint Joseph's will be looking to defend its overall points title.

The Dad Vail is the country's largest collegiate rowing event.
