America goes top of Mexican league with win

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Reigning champion America defeated Morelia 3-1 on Saturday to move into first position in Mexico's first division, with Veracruz slipping after its 3-1 loss against Toluca on Sunday.

Leon won 3-1 on Saturday against Monterrey and is in second place - level with America on 13 points - after seven rounds of matches.

In other games this weekend, Tijuana and Santos Laguna drew 1-1, Puebla lost 2-1 against Cruz Azul, Tigres drew 2-2 against Chiapas, Atlas drew 1-1 with Pumas, Queretaro defeated Chivas 2-0 and Atlante drew 1-1 against Pachuca.

Raul Jimenez headed in America's first in the 49th minute, with Luis Mendoza netting the second from a tight angle in the 62nd and adding the third with a chipped finish in the 82nd.

Edgar Andrade scored Morelia's goal with a fiercely driven free kick from 30 yards (meters) in the 69th.

Isaac Brizuela curled in the opener for Toluca from the edge of the penalty area in the 24th, but Veracruz's Oscar Mascorro leveled one minute before halftime.

Paraguayans Richard Ortiz and Pablo Velazquez scored second-half goals to give Toluca the victory.

Leon came from behind with three second-half goals, after Humberto Suazo capitalized on a defensive error to hand Monterrey the lead in the 23rd. Mauro Boselli equalized from the penalty spot in the 56th and added his second in the 80th, after Omar Arellano had been sent off for Monterrey in the 61st.

Franco Arizala completed the scoring for Leon five minutes later.

Jesus Escoboza brought the score level in the 89th for Santos Laguna, after Ecuadorian Fidel Martinez struck the opener for Tijuana two minutes after halftime.

Joao Rojas finished from a tight angle in the 88th to win the game for Cruz Azul. U.S. international Michael Orozco had opened the scoring for Puebla in the 27th, with Marione Pavone equalizing in the 80th.

Mauricio Romero scored two second-half goals as Chiapas came from two goals behind to draw against Tigres. Damian Alvarez had put Tigres in the lead in the 15th and Alan Pulido extended it in three minutes before halftime.

Argentine Ariel Nahuelpan deflected a free kick into the net for Pumas' only goal in the 36th, with Omar Bravo equalizing for Atlas in the 79th.

Chivas' poor start to the season continued with Brazilian Apodi scoring for Queretaro in the 12th and Esteban Paredes adding the second in the 34th.

Roberto Nanni leveled the scores for Atlante from the penalty spot eight from the end, after Daniel Luduena had handed Pachuca the lead in the 10th.
