Widely hailed as the best player in the game, Argentina superstar Lionel Messi will enter the 2014 World Cup as a 7/1 favorite to be the tournament’s top scorer.
A four-time winner of FIFA’s World Player of the Year, Messi was also shortlisted for the Golden Ball award at the 2010 World Cup.
In addition to being the favorite to lead in scoring at Brazil 2014, Messi is also a 1/1 favorite to lead all Barcelona players in scoring, and an Argentina World Cup victory coupled with a scoring title by Messi carries odds of 16/1.
Messi is followed closely in top goal scorer props betting by Brazil’s Neymar. The 2014 World Cup is expected to be a springboard to superstardom for the 22-year-old forward, who has odds of 10/1 to be top goal scorer.
Neymar has been on fire in matches leading up to the World Cup, recording his first international hat trick in a recent friendly against South Africa, and adding a goal and two assists in a friendly against Panama last week.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s all-time leading goal scorer, currently sports odds of 12/1 to lead the way at the 2014 World Cup. The Portuguese captain has been outstanding in World Cup qualifying, potting eight goals, including all four goals against Sweden in a qualification playoff that clinched Portugal’s berth at World Cup 2014.
However, a nagging knee injury could impact Ronaldo’s effectiveness at the tournament and Portugal’s chances of advancing beyond the group stage. While Germany is currently a 2/3 favorite to win Group G, Portugal is a 10/21 favorite to reach the round of 16.
Another Argentina star sits among the list of top goalscorer favorites. Sergio Aguero is pegged at 14/1 to lead all goal scorers at Brazil 2014. Often overlooked in the shadow of Lionel Messi, Aguero is an offensive force in his own right.
He and Messi, who have played together since they were teenagers, are expected to once again form an offensive dynamic duo for Argentina. Aguero is also a 5/6 favorite to lead all Manchester City players in scoring at the World Cup.
Rounding out the list of favorites is Uruguay’s Luis Suarez, with odds of 18/1. Suarez scored four times at the 2011 Copa America, powering Uruguay to a record 15th title and earning Player of the Tournament honors.
However, recent knee surgery has put Suarez’ World Cup availability in question, and could impact Suarez’ odds in top goal scorer props wagering.
