Leading seed Verdasco wins Topshelf opener

's-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands (AP) Leading seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain survived a shaky performance to beat Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 and open his account in the Topshelf Open on Tuesday.

Verdasco, the highest seeded man after countryman David Ferrer pulled out, served up 13 aces but also 15 double faults.

He improved to 6-0 against Mathieu.

Top-seeded woman Simona Halep, the French Open runner-up, opens against Belarus qualifier Olga Govortsova.
