One of the most popular Orioles of recent years, Tommy Hunter, signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Cleveland Indians.
Hunter, who was 21-20 with a 4.22 ERA with the Orioles in four seasons, was sent to the Chicago Cubs at last July’s trading deadline for outfielder Junior Lake.
In July 2011, Hunter was acquired with Chris Davis from the Texas Rangers for Koji Uehara.
Originally a starter, Hunter was converted to the bullpen in 2012, and has pitched in relief since. He was given the closer’s job in 2014, but by mid-May had been supplanted by Zach Britton.
NOTES: The Orioles officially announced the hiring of Joe McIlvaine as Senior Advisor, Player Personnel. McIlvaine, who has been the general manager of the New York Mets and San Diego Padres, will assist Dan Duquette on player personnel and scouting with an eye on this year’s draft.
Most recently, McIlvaine had been a special assistant to Seattle and Minnesota.
-C.J. Riefenhauser, who the Orioles had designated for assignment last week, was claimed on waivers by the Chicago Cubs. The left-handed reliever had come from Seattle in the trade for Mark Trumbo in December.
