BOSTON – Craig Breslow becomes the oldest pitcher to make his American League debut since the Orioles’ Danny Boone on Sept. 30, 1990. He’s made 522 relief appearances, and no left-hander has made more until his first start than Chuck McElroy, who started for the Orioles on Sept. 20, 2000 after 602 games out of the bullpen.
Breslow is expected to be limited to 40 pitches and with Rich Hill pitching a complete game on Friday, Boston is likely to have a full bullpen.
“The last month has really been as challenging lineups and batting orders to make out. Because you're trying to not make them face multiple hitters with one pitcher. But that's their business and how they're going to go about it. But especially after they got nine innings out of their starter last night. They've got all their bullets," manager Buck Showalter said.
Ryan Flaherty makes his first start in left field since July 1, 2012.
“Statistically, he’s our best hitter here in this ballpark,” Showalter said.
Flaherty has a .388 average in 18 games in Fenway Park.
Chris Davis has a bruised shin and is the DH instead of playing the field.
