BALTIMORE --- There was an extra Oriole in the clubhouse on Monday. Chris Parmelee, who was signed to a minor league contract in January, had his own cubicle with No. 41.
Parmelee, who batted .312 with six home runs and 32 RBIs in 61 games at Triple-A Norfolk, had an opt-out date of June 15, which was already extended once, and will be added to the Orioles roster on Tuesday.
“He had as good a year as anybody in Triple-A, for our team, and for the other teams, played the outfield well, and first base. He can do a lot of things. He has options to play in the big leagues somewhere else, I would imagine,” manager Buck Showalter said.
The Orioles can have an extra player around for just one day before a move must be made.
“He’s going to take BP, do all his work on the field. He can’t be in the dugout today,” Showalter said.
“We’ll have to make a move if we activate him tomorrow, obviously.”
Parmelee and his family drove 4 ½ hours from Norfolk on Monday morning. He was told on Sunday he’d be coming up.
He played parts of four seasons for Minnesota with an average of .249. Paremelee, who has played about an equal amount of first base and right field, had watched several of his teammates called up, and he’s excited to join some of them here.
“I was uncertain about that. It had passed my mind and crossed through but I’m here and I’m real excited to get called up. It’s one of those things. I’m not activated yet. That’s what they told me, but we’ll see what happens tomorrow,” Parmelee said.
