SARASOTA, Fla. – Chris Tillman was scheduled to pitch in Sunday’s intrasquad game. However, he’s been diagnosed with a core muscle injury.
“He says it doesn’t hurt him running or throwing,” manager Buck Showalter said.
“Right now, it’s precautionary. If it lingers, we’ll probably proceed with some other forms of trying to find out what it is. He said it probably wouldn’t be as much concern if it were later on in the spring. We want to be cautious with it right now, but we’ll see.”
Trainer Richie Bancells told Showalter Tillman felt good when he left on Saturday. “He said he got up last night and kind of felt it a little bit at home Richie was a little surprised it wasn’t a lot better today,” Showalter said.
“There’s a lot of unknown. Who knows where we go? Richie said if we get to the point where it didn’t get better in a while —I don't know what a while is— we might do an MRI on it, see if there’s something else there. But we’re not there yet.”
Tillman began the 2013 season on the disabled list with a strained abdominal muscle.
NOTES: Chaz Roe, who was hit on the left knee by Ryan Flaherty’s single in Saturday’s intrasquad game is fine.
“He’s OK, sore. I didn’t realize it had gotten that much of the meat. I thought it was like his shoe or something. It hit him right in the hamstring,” Showalter said.
