For the first time since his Tommy John surgery, Matt Wieters will catch on consecutive days. Wieters, who caught Monday’s game is in the lineup for Tuesday night’s game against Minnesota.
Manager Buck Showalter has used Wieters behind the plate in consecutive games, but only if there was a day off between them.
Ever since Wieters returned on June 4, Showalter has been saying it’s a question of when and not if for the catcher. He has repeatedly said that Wieters would have to initiate the discussion.
Last week when the question was again raised, Showalter said the subject could soon be revised to when Wieters might catch in three consecutive games.
Because the Orioles will continue to monitor Wieters carefully, he’s not likely to play in a day game immediately following a night game.
If that’s the case, Wieters wouldn’t likely try to play on three straight days until July 27-Aug. 1 when the Orioles have six consecutive night games.
Assuming Wieters feels fine on Wednesday, he’s likely to catch again on Friday night and could possibly play again on Saturday night.
The Orioles are 11-5 when Wieters starts at catcher.
NOTES: The Orioles have rescheduled their question and answer session between Showalter, Dan Duquette and season ticket holders for Aug. 15. The players’ autograph session will precede the talk.
