Between now and the start of training camp in late July, I’ll take a periodic look at the Ravens’ roster and the offseason changes they have made. With the Ravens holding OTA’s today and Thursday, today’s focus is on quarterbacks:
On the roster: Joe Flacco, Jerry Lovelocke, Bryn Renner, Matt Schaub.
Likely to make the 53: Flacco, Schaub
Fighting for a roster spot: Lovelocke, Renner.
Comments: There’s obviously no quarterback controversy with the Ravens, where Flacco has not missed a game in seven years. The backup job belongs to Schaub, who signed a one-year, $2 million contract as insurance in case Flacco finally misses action.
The battle is for the No. 3 quarterback spot between Lovelocke and Renner. Lovelocke is a Baltimore native, an undrafted free agent from Prairie View. He has size (6-foot-5, 240 pounds), he’s mobile, and his impressive performance during the Ravens’ local prospect day helped earned him a longer look
The Broncos cut Renner last August, and the Ravens signed him in January. He was North Carolina’s starting quarterback in 2012 and 2013.
Whoever wins between Lovelocke and Renner will likely be placed on the practice squad instead of the 53-man roster. Meanwhile, Flacco will spend OTA’s and the entire offseason adjusting to any changes made by new offensive coordinator Marc Trestman.
