OWINGS MILLS - The Ravens take the field Saturday, Aug. 1, at 1 p.m. for their third training camp practice. Here’s what I’ll be watching for:
1. Who will stand out in the first practice with pads?
Players will be in pads for the first time in camp. The intensity and hitting will pick up, and coaches will learn more about which players are rising, or falling.
“Everybody’s looking forward to it,” said Ravens coach John Harbaugh. “That’s the next step, so we’ll see guys actually blocking people and getting off blocks. We’ll still try to keep them off the ground. We’ll do everything we can to keep them healthy in that sense, but they’ll be banging a little harder and the collisions or the tussles that they have in there will be a little more for real, and it will be a little more like real football.”
2. Will defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan be back after taking an IV on Friday?
Jernigan became dehydrated Friday, and we’ll see if he practices. The Ravens are counting on Jernigan to play more snaps this season. How Jernigan holds up during training camp could be an indicator of how ready he is to handle more playing time.
3. Will linebacker Elvis Dumervil (tendinitis) and wide receiver Bernard Perriman (knee) return?
Both missed practice Friday. Neither injury is thought to be serious, but both are key players. It would be nice to see them return to the mix.
