J.J. Hardy, who has been on the disabled list since suffering a fracture in his left foot on May 1, will begin a rehab assignment at Bowie on Tuesday.
Hardy has been rehabbing the foot in Sarasota, Fla. since May 20, and the Orioles would like to have him available when Manny Machado begins serving his suspension for fighting.
Manager Buck Showalter said last week that he hoped Hardy wouldn’t need an extended rehab stint.
The Baysox have a three-game series with Portland beginning Tuesday, and if the Orioles wish to continue Hardy’s rehab stint, they’ll have to find somewhere else for him to play.
Machado is currently appealing his four-game suspension, and while the Orioles won’t activate Hardy before he’s ready to play, it would be ideal if he were back by the time Machado must sit.
NOTE: Yovani Gallardo allowed a run on a hit in five innings in what is likely to be his final rehab start for Norfolk. Gallardo threw 90 pitches for the Tides in their game at Charlotte. His only run was on a home run. He struck out five and walked two. He's on track to start Saturday for the Orioles against Toronto.
