TORONTO — It was a routine fly ball for Hyun Soo Kim.
Kim was about to catch Melvin Upton Jr.’s fly ball for the final out of the seventh inning.
Suddenly, an object came out of the stands and stunned the South Korean, who nevertheless caught the fly ball.
“I was trying to catch the ball and I thought that was actually a ball, so I thought I missed the ball. And then I found out it was a beer can, which was thrown perfectly (at) me. It never happened to me before so it was surprising. I was kind of shocked,” Kim said through his translator.
Adam Jones looked up to the stands, trying to find the miscreant, but couldn’t.
“We get it. We’re the opponent. We completely understand that, but to throw something at a player; that’s just as pathetic as it gets, and I hope they find the guy, and I hope they press charges. He’s not looking. You could hit him in the back of the head, you never know what could happen,” Jones said.
Manager Buck Showalter ran onto the field to try and find out who attacked Kim. He also discussed the situation with the umpires.
“I was put in a dangerous moment and it was definitely scary if I actually got hit, it would have gotten worse, so I’m asking fans that this is something that should not happen,” Kim said.
There were reports that Jones and Kim were targeted with racial slurs by the Rogers Centre crowd, something the two didn’t deny.
“You hear everything. We can hear everything, man, cussing you, flipping you off. That’s fine, but to go out of character, but to put us in harm’s way, we’re here to play baseball, nothing more, nothing less, puts us in harm’s way, it’s not part of the game, it’s not part of any sport,” Jones said.
Jones is an enthusiastic sports fan and he enjoys bantering with fans, and even offered some hockey-style alternatives to beer cans.
“Throw an octopus. Throw hats,” Jones said.
Jones yelled at the crowd, looking for the perpetrator.
“I just looked in their direction, and told them what I felt,” Jones said. “I hope they find the person, and I hope they [prosecute] him.”
