Is another former John Harbaugh assistant coach about to become an NFL head coach?
Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin has been scheduled to interview with both the Rams and Chargers for their head coaching position, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Austin was the Ravens’ secondary coach under Harbaugh for three seasons (2011-13). When Jim Caldwell went from Ravens offensive coordinator to Lions head coach in 2014, Austin went with Caldwell to become Detroit’s defensive coordinator.
Three former Harbaugh assistants are currently NFL head coaches – Caldwell, Hue Jackson (Browns), and Chuck Pagano (Colts). Two other former Harbaugh assistants recently left their jobs – Gary Kubiak, who resigned as Broncos head coach earlier this month for health reasons, and Rex Ryan, who was fired by the Bills as head coach. Former Browns coach Mike Pettine was also a former Harbaugh assistant coach.
The Lions reaching the playoffs this season was the latest addition to Austin’s resume, and he was free to travel for interviews after Saturday’s loss to the Seahawks. If Austin impresses the Rams or Chargers, he could be the latest Harbaugh assistant to land a head coaching spot.
