February was not the best month for Washington. The Capitals saw their lead in the Metropolitan Division evaporate after a 6-6-2 record.
Clearly, they were ready to turn the page as evidenced by their dominant 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Stadium Series. It was one of their best wins of the season. That's the good news.
The bad news is that now the Caps must head to California to face the dreaded California gauntlet of Anaheim, Los Angeles and San Jose. Washington went 0-3-0 on that road trip last season. They cannot afford to do so again this year.
Yes, the Caps are locked in a tight division race with only a two-point lead over Philadelphia and a three-point lead over Pittsburgh, but it goes deeper than that. Washington failed to gain any momentum from lackluster wins over Buffalo (twice) and Ottawa when trying to overcome their February swoon. They desperately need to build off of their big win on the big stage of the Stadium Series to ensure they really have put that slump behind them.
If they return from California after another 0-3-0 trip, what did the win over Toronto ultimately accomplish other than earning them two points?
