The Caps’ first trip to Vegas was, well, a mostly forgettable one.
The visitors surrendered three goals in the opening 15 minutes, and the expansion Golden Knights skated to a decisive 3-0 victory at T-Mobile Arena. The defeat was Washington’s second in two days; Alex Ovechkin and Co. fell 3-2 in overtime at Arizona on Friday night.
Tarik’s three stars of the game:
The 24-year-old forward delivered the backbreaker late in the first period. The play began with Jonathan Marchessault corralling the puck off a shin pad down low and getting it Reilly Smith, who zipped a perfect-placed cross crease pass to Karlsson. The goal gave the Golden Knights a 3-0 lead at14:55 and ended the competitive portion of the night.
2-Marc Andre-Fleury, Golden Knights
The former Penguins’ netminder didn’t face a ton of Grade-A chances. He was, however, solid early and very good when Vegas needed him to be late in the contest. Fleury handed Washington its second blanking of the season, while also earning his first shutout as a Golden Knight.
3-Devante Smith-Pelly, Capitals
Coach Barry Trotz sat the veteran forward out the previous two games as a healthy scratch. On Saturday, DSP spent 60 minutes making sure that thought doesn’t cross Trotz’s mind again anytime soon. Smith-Pelly started on the fourth line and was promoted to Ovechkin’s line by the second period. Smith-Pelly finished with two shots on net (six attempts) and three hits.
