That was an encouraging start for Chris Tillman on Saturday, but even so, the Orioles have to be looking for more starting pitching.
Lets say that Tillman can consistently be more like he was Saturday night than he was in his previous, awful outing. That would basically put the Orioles back where they were before Jason Hammel got hurt two reliable starters, Tillman and Wei-Yin Chen. Meanwhile, Hammel may not be back from injury until September.
One name being tossed about in connection with the Orioles is Bartolo Colon. Its a stopgap move hes 39 but thats the sort of thing you do when youre chasing a playoff berth. Look at Colons three starts this month: 6 innings, 1 earned run; 8 23 innings, 1 ER; 7 innings, 4 ER. You dont think the Orioles would take that from a member of their rotation?
However, is the hefty right-hander available? Because dealing a veteran, effective pitcher is not the sort of thing you do when youre chasing a playoff berth. Colons club, the Athletics, is one of three teams, along with the Orioles and White Sox, tied for the last American League postseason spot and a half-game out of the No. 1 wild-card position occupied by the Angels. And the As are handing it to the Yankees in their current series, so maybe Oakland is in the race to stay or at least until the non-waiver trade deadline at the end of July.
