Fishing on the Potomac
Last week water temperatures actually dropped to 82! This week, expect water to return to upper 80s as the week warms! But, this week we expect cloud cover, so warm ups wont be as dramatic and fish should be biting. Early morning high tides give a lot of flexibility for anglers this week.
Water temperatures have been trending upward in the last few days and that could continue. NBC Ch. 4 meteorologist "Weather Kim" Martucci says, A hot start will get hotter by Tuesday. A slight cooling off Wednesday into the lower 90s with a chance of isolated thunderstorms. Thursday even cooler with more isolated thunderstorms. Friday into the weekend dry with highs in the upper 80s!
Topwaters early like Lucky Crafts G-Splash and walkers like Lucky Crafts Gunfish worked over submerged wood and grass should produce. If not, dont hesitate to go a bit deeper and louder!
To go louder, try wake baits like Manns Waker. Braid snaps this lure out of grass. Burn in clear water and slower in stained! Manns Baby 1-Minus in firetiger patterns on 16-pound test GAMMA Edge Fluorocarbon line and a KVD cranking rod will pick off aggressive fish.
But chatter jigs and swim jigs in blackblue combos are still bringing in bigger fish. Just a bit tougher to use in thicker grass. Again, GAMMA fluorocarbon line has the strength to snap out of grass. With chatter jigs, try Manns HardNose Jerkshad trailer. For Swim jigs, Manns Stone Jig keeper holds trailers like HardNose craws.
After tides fall, keep swimming jigs and chatterjigs with a mix of swimming and pitching Mizmo tubes. Also a good time to start throwing swimbaits. The Mustad Ultra Point Swimbait hook adds weight where you need it to work these baits at any speed.
