He loves me, he loves me not
DMV Sports pairs for Valentine's Day
BY J.J. REGAN — It's Valentine's Day! In sports, just like in life, some relationships are fairytales and others fall woefully short. Here are some of the local sports couples who work so well together and those who make us cringe.
He loves me! Kirk Cousins and Jordan Reed
Kirk Cousins got his chance to take over the Redskins this year and there was Jordan Reed, right when he needed him the most. It's a story straight out of a Nicholas Sparks book. Cousins and Reed connected 87 times for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns, all of which led the team.
He loves me not! Alfred Morris and Matt Jones
This looked like a match made in Heaven, but it didn't work out quite like everyone had hoped. Alfred Morris and Matt Jones made for a formidable tandem, but rather than compliment one another, the two backs struggled together. Both seem like the type of players who needs to build up momentum over the course of a game. Unfortunately, these two may benefit from some time apart.
He loves me! Justin Tucker and Sam Koch
There were few bright spots for the Ravens in 2015, but one of them was the play of Justin Tucker and Sam Koch. Tucker remains one of the most clutch kickers in the NFL with Koch as his holder. Koch had a strong season in his own right as he was selected to the Pro Bowl. They're like the nerdy couple in high school. You never really took much notice of them much, but then graduation day rolls around and you see them still together and think to yourself, good for them.
He loves me not! The Ravens and the golden pants
Like Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton, the Ravens with the golden pants was just ugly and weird. Let's hope this was just a phase.
He loves me! John Wall and Bradley Beal
The Wizards are at their best when both John Wall and Bradley Beal are at the top of their game. When they're both healthy, the Wizards look like one of the best teams in the East. When they're not, they look like they could miss the playoffs completely. You can just imagine Wall telling Beal after a game, "You complete me."
He loves me not! Marcin Gortat and Randy Wittman
Communication is important for every relationship and that's something Marcin Gortat and Randy Wittman need to work on after trading jabs through the media in November. Just imagine if your significant other could go to the press every time you made him/her mad.
He loves me! Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom
A true NHL power couple, Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom have been one of the best hockey tandems for nearly a decade. Let's hope they finally put a ring on it this year.
He loves me not! Alex Ovechkin and Justin Williams
Justin Williams has been a great addition for the Caps, but there was a stretch in November where Alex Ovechkin probably felt this relationship was holding him back. On the cusp of breaking the all-time NHL scoring record for Russian players, Ovechkin had the record-breaking goal taken away not once, but twice because of Williams thanks to a coach's challenge.
He loves me! Max Scherzer and Wilson Ramos
As the saying goes, behind every great pitcher is a great catcher. Max Scherzer threw not one, but two no-hitters in 2015 and Wilson Ramos was behind the plate for both of them.
He loves me not! Bryce Harper and Jonathan Papelbon
It's never a good idea to strangle someone, whether it be in a love story or in a baseball game. That's especially true for a player who is new to a team and picks a fight with the league MVP. I doubt this story will have a fairytale ending.
He loves me! Adam Jones and Chris Davis
The 2015 season was a disappointing one for the Orioles, but these two are always fun to watch. They also set Twitter ablaze with a short bromance in January that many took to mean Chris Davis would re-sign with the Orioles. He did soon after. You just can't tear these two apart....
He loves me not! Brian Matusz and a 'foreign substance'
In May of 2015, Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz became the second pitcher in the course of a week ejected for using a foreign substance. Stories of 'forbidden love' are always compelling.
