New Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin received a standing ovation at XFINITY Center in College Park during the basketball team’s 96-55 victory over St. Francis (PA) on Friday night.
Earlier, he had already hit the ground running as a recruiter for his new program.
Five-star linebacker Rahshaun Smith tweeted a photo on Friday of himself with Durkin, along with a caption reading, “The Missing Piece To The Puzzle, Some B1G Things Coming, College Park Wassup.”

Smith is rated as the No. 14 overall player in the class, according to Rivals.com. He was once committed to Clemson and his ties to the Baltimore area make him another priority for the Terrapins.
Durkin, a defensive mind who orchestrated one of the best defenses in the country this past season at Michigan, could be a draw.
“Recruiting, it’s one of those things you got to do every single day,” the head coach said during his introductory press conference on Thursday. “You’ve got to be relentless and tireless about it and I think … just be yourself.
“Some guys are fast talkers and salesmen and all that, everyone has their own way and my way is I’m very straightforward and honest with people and I’m just genuine with my dealings with them, just keep going through it.”
