A shock, sure, considering where this program was just one year ago. But he also had some concerns about what being favored means for a team like Maryland heading into the season.
"We can't handle prosperity," he said, referring to teams in the area. "It's great for recruiting. It's great pub. I love it. I've said it since day one, there's something in the water in the DMV.
"Have you been around the last two decades? I've seen what's happened to the college teams and the pro teams and the pickers in Vegas -- again -- blah, blah, blah, blah, blah."
Brian Mitchell chimed in with a note about the fact that expectations now fall on the shoulders of head coach Mark Turgeon and other leadership figures within the program. Hernandez then continued.
"I just know that now Coach Turgeon's staff is going to have to talk the boys off the ledge a little bit because young folks are going to be reading, 'Oh, we're picked No. 1? OK, let's go.' And not go to work.
"I'm not saying it's going to happen, but it has happened."
