Potential Adam Oates replacements
Barry Trotz, former head coach, Nashville Predators
Trotz built a reputation for playing a very structured system in his 15 years behind the bench of the Predators, where he coached caps right wing Joel Ward.
Guy Boucher, former head coach, Tampa Bay Lightning
Guy Boucher, 42, guided the Tampa Bay Lightning past the Capitals and into the 2011 Eastern Conference finals but when his team missed the playoffs the following year he was fired 31 games into last season. Now coaching in Switzerland, Boucher would be a dynamic option behind the bench.
Phil Housley, Nashville Predators, assistant coach
Housley, 50, is a Hall of Fame defenseman who is serving as Peter Laviolette's assistant coach for Team USA in the 2014 World Championships. He lacks head coaching experience in the NHL but could be an effective assistant under Laviolette or Barry Trotz. UPDATE: Housley joined Peter Laviolette's staff in Nashville.
Ken Hitchcock, St. Louis Blues, head coach
Hitchcock, 62, is on the hot seat in St. Louis after the Blues failed to get out of the first round of the playoffs for the second straight year. Hitchcock is a very demanding coach who would not tolerate a lack of back checking from his top players. He's coached four NHL teams over 18 seasons, winning the Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999. *UPDATE: Hitchcock has resigned with the Blues
Dan Bylsma, Pittsburgh Penguins, head coach
Bylsma, 43, would only be available to the Caps if the Penguins were eliminated in decisive fashion in these playoffs. He won a Stanley Cup with some of the most talented players in the NHL in Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, but would the Pens let him go?
Peter Laviolette, former head coach, Philadelphia Flyers
Laviolette is itching to get back behind an NHL bench after being fired by the Flyers three games into this season. UPDATE: Laviolette is off the table for the Caps as he agreed to coach the Nashville Predators.
