Chandler Stephenson is headed back to Hershey, the Caps announced on Thursday.
Stephenson played in three games for the Caps in the past two weeks in spot duty for Jay Beagle (illness) and T.J. Oshie (personal). He got into the lineup again on Wednesday against the Boston Bruins as Justin Williams was made a late scratch due to a lower-body injury.
Before you read into what Stephenson being sent down to the AHL may mean for the health of Williams, let me spoil it for you: It means nothing. The team has sent players back and forth between Hershey all season in an effort to save cap room. With the team off on Thursday, there's no real point to keeping Stephenson on the roster. But the trip back to Hershey could be a short one.
Stephenson's assignment to the AHL leaves the Caps again with the minimum number of forwards. With a trip to Montreal on Saturday, don't be surprised on Friday if the Caps make another recall to Herhsey, whether it be Stephenson or another forward, to give the team an extra man.
In 41 games this season with the Bears, Stephenson has earned 24 points and ranks fifth on the team in assists (18).
