The Seattle Arena investment group led by Chris Hansen added a big-name on Monday. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson announced via Twitter that he is partnering with the group in an effort to bring both an NHL and NBA team to the city.
Wilson’s announcement comes the same day in which the Arizona Coyotes, once thought to be the most likely candidate to relocate, announced plans for a new arena.
The addition of a new team in Las Vegas in 2017, however, has appeared to open the door for further expansion as a more likely scenario for bringing a team to Seattle rather than relocation. Las Vegas brings the number of NHL teams to 31 with 15 in the Western Conference and 16 in the east. Seattle would add another team to the west and balance out the conferences.
Bringing a new arena to Seattle has been a long process as investors have struggled to reach an agreement with the city on possible locations and how to fund the project. Adding a player as beloved in the city as Wilson should be a huge boost to their efforts.
