The Nationals recalled outfielder Matt den Dekker to serve as their 26th man for Saturday's doubleheader against the Marlins, using their off-days last Thursday and this Monday to avoid the need for an extra pitcher.
Stephen Strasburg will start the 1:05 p.m. game, while Tanner Roark will pitch the 7:05 p.m. nightcap. Manager Dusty Baker felt an outfielder could be best used with his bullpen also in good shape.
"We felt he deserved it and we need him. He'll probably play one of these games here," Baker said. "Also, our bullpen wasn't highly taxed last night. And the fact that we have a day off on Monday against. If we were in a consecutive games streak or if we were playing Monday, then we'd probably consider doing something else."
den Dekker, 28, has played 17 games with the Nationals this season due to the oblique injury Ben Revere rehabbed in the month of April. den Dekker has a .194 average with one homer and four RBI. He has a .158 average in five games with Triple-A Syracuse.
