Gruden says Redskins kick and punt returners are to be determined

We know who will be starting on offense and for the Redskins against the Dolphins on Sunday. But there are a couple of positions that could have major impact on the game that remain up in the air.

According to Gruden, the team has not yet decided who will be returning punts and kickoffs for his team.

“We’re working on it,” when he was asked who would be handling the return duties. “We’ve got another couple days here to make sure who’s who and who’s where. We’ve got some good options, which is a good thing. We’ll finalize that probably after tomorrow’s practice.”

The team’s depth chart, which is unofficial, lists Andre Roberts as the punt returner and Chris Thompson as the kickoff returner. During the preseason, Thompson and Rashad Ross returned the kickoffs and Thompson, Roberts, Ross, and Jamison Crowder all handled punts.

One factor that could be holding up the decision is Crowder’s status. After he was drafted in the fourth round he appeared to be the favorite to return punts this season. But a hamstring strain cost him a lot of time in training camp and it kept him out of all but one of the preseason games. While he might get the job eventually, Gruden may be hesitant to put him out there with limited preparation.

It’s also possible that Gruden knows exactly who will be returning on Sunday but he doesn’t want to say to keep a key bit of information away from the Dolphins. The chances are good that we won’t find out who is returning kicks until he lines up deep against the Dolphins on Sunday.

Redskins to play on Thanksgiving for third consecutive season

The Washington Redskins are playing on Thanksgiving ... again.

With the 2018 NFL regular-season schedule set for an official release on Thursday night, news has begun to leak on the different dates.

The Redskins will travel to Dallas yet again to take on the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, NBC Sports Washington's JP Finlay reports on Thursday afternoon.

The Week 12 showdown will take place on Thursday, Nov. 22 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

Last season, the Redskins beat the Giants at home 20-10 to increase their all-time Thanksgiving Day record to a whopping 3-7. That game marked the first time since the 1973 and 1974 seasons that the Redskins' played on Thanksgiving back-to-back years.

The 2018 season marks unchartered territory for the Redskins.

Against non-Cowboys opponents, the Redskins are actually undefeated on Turkey Day. But this showdown will be against their dreaded division rivals who hosted them two seasons ago on Thanksgiving.

The Cowboys won that matchup 31-26 with two rushing TDs from Ezekiel Elliot while Jordan Reed caught two TD passes from Kirk Cousins.

The Redskins and Cowboys will meet under the bright lights of AT&T Stadium on November 22. Game time to be determined.

The 2018 NFL Season begins on Thursday, Sept. 6 with the Thursday Night Football season-opener. Week 1 commences on Sunday, Sept. 9 with a full slate of games.
