When most people hear some of Kevin Gates' best songs come on the radio or on their playlist, most notably "2 Phones" and "Really Really," they probably get extremely riled up, because those songs are great and will get anyone riled up. Therefore, when Trent Williams hears those tracks, he probably gets riled up, too, simply because it's nearly impossible not to.
However, any Kevin Gates anthem also holds a personal connection for Williams, considering the two have actually known each other for quite a while. And when asked about their relationship after Sunday's training camp practice in Richmond, the lineman described how it all started.
"I met Kevin years back," he said. "One of my good friends was managing him. We hung out a few times, and we just hit it off. We've always kept in touch, real good guy."
Despite Gates' recent rise to mainstream fame — his newest album Islah peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Top 200 chart and has been on the chart for 27 weeks in total — and the demanding, almost year-round nature of Williams' job, it does sound like they're still able to carve out time for one another. In fact, just a week or so ago, the two spoke over FaceTime, just before the Redskins opened up training camp.
"We talk to each other often, we just kinda kept that relationship going," Williams said. "Maybe five or six years now. He always hits me up with good advice, good motivation."
Though the Pro Bowler wanted to keep their conversations private, he wasn't reserved at all when it came time to reflect on how high Gates has climbed in the music industry.
"It's extremely cool to see," he said. "Almost feels unreal in a sense. I'm extremely proud of him and the success he's having. His career shows nothing but growth thus far, so I expect him to continue to grow."
No. 71 was bragging about his buddy, but he just as easily could've been commenting on himself. Now, both Williams and Gates have made it to the top of their respective fields. It's up to them to make sure they Don't Get Tired of their grinds and stay there.
