Every time someone flips through the 2016 Washington-Lee High School yearbook, Joe Langley's senior picture is going to stand out, and that's exactly how he wants it to be. It's not the photo itself that's the memorable part, however — it's what's underneath it.
It's not like the portrait of Langley is a bad one; the VCU-bound 18-year-old is dressed quite sharply in a tuxedo, in fact. But it's the quote beneath Langley, three famous words uttered by his favorite quarterback, that'll cause future browsers to pause for a few seconds.
"You like that?! You like that?! - Kirk Cousins" is what the inscription reads. In Langley's mind, that's the perfect way to honor an athlete who's "a great guy on and off the field" and represents the franchise he adores with class.
"The Redskins are a huge part of who I am," he told CSN. "I had to do it. Kirk plays with heart and focus, and plays with a chip on his shoulder. I'd love to meet Kirk one day."
The Arlington native actually had to submit his quote by the middle of November last year, which just so happened to be a few weeks after the signal caller's passionate outburst tore up the Internet following a major comeback against the Bucs. Interestingly enough, he and his friends had already started using the phrase when joking around with each other, so once he saw No. 8 scream it in the hallways of FedEx Field, Langley knew what saying would live on permanently under his picture.
"It was poetic justice," he said.
That alone would've made for a nice enough story. On Thursday night, though, as Langley was watching SportsCenter in his basement with a few buddies, he checked Twitter and saw that Cousins himself had posted a message thanking him for the tribute and even wishing him well at college.
Seven months after deciding to go with, "You like that?!" over something more typical from an author, president or thinker, Langley couldn't believe what he was seeing.
Joe, love the yearbook quote. Thanks for your loyalty & support! Best of luck at VCU this fall! pic.twitter.com/Gms2jWrcZX— Kirk Cousins (@KirkCousins8) June 10, 2016
"That's class right there," he said. "That just shows you Kirk's dedication to the fans. My phone is still blowing up with texts and notifications with congratulations, but I don't feel as if I need to be congratulated. I feel as if Kirk should be recognized more for this."
That one shoutout from Washington's signal caller was quite the reward for Langley, who stayed dedicated to his quote of choice despite his mom asking him to come up with something "better." And that type of commitment is something he hopes the Redskins show Cousins moving forward.
"I want Kirk here long term," Langley said. "With a season like , I don't see how any Redskin fan wouldn't want him here for longer. He's gonna hold that Lombardi trophy for us one day, I assure you."
